Instant Messenger Reflections

26 01 2008

In college instant messenger was ubiquitous. At three a.m. my buddy list was buzzing with life. I would have three instant messenger windows open at once. In one window I would be studying for calculus with a friend, in another window providing relationship advice and in another talking with my roommate about what food we wanted to order. Signing online was connecting to my world. Day or night I was never alone.

Some of the best conversations happened on instant messenger during finals. The more stressed out people became the more they wanted to confide online. We often shared ideas and feelings we would never say in person. Many good friendships and relationships started and ended in this way.

I haven’t been able to recreate this environment outside of college. While I have have several hundred friends on Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter, I have nowhere near the interaction of instant messenger several years ago. It’s possible that I am confusing technology for time period. If I were in college right  now maybe Twitter and Facebook would provide just as opportunity as instant  messenger. Or perhaps not. And for the most part, I’ve found, speaking on Twitter is  like having a conversation at a concert with someone who is half listening and can half hear you.

Skype provides me with a reason to believe that there is something to my observation. I’ve seen many business people who work for international companies form unusually close relationships with the coworkers over Skype. I think much of this is in part to that fact that they know that they nearly always has a group of people they can speak with at any time of the night or day.

Have you experienced a change in your social group because of a change in technology? I’d love to hear your story.

Live Journal, Confessional and More…

26 01 2008

A few members of blog group are members of the Live Journal community. It’s surprising to me that Live Journal has active communities all around the country that are relatively under the radar. The Davis Square Live Journal  was offered as a particularly good example of an active community. If you don’t already know about it, check it out.
•    Jesse talked about a website for Oberlin college students called the Confessional. It’s a faceless, nameless meeting of the “hive mind,” to discuss everything from homework to hooking up. Imagine going to a school where everyone logged onto the same website just to read secrets about you. Intense.

•    A few quotes from this week’s blog group:
•     “I don’t like people who have the same Facebook status as their twitter
•    “Take the time to copy and paste. This automatic importing is just spam!”
•    “it’s harder and harder to have different worlds now. Work world. Social world. They all collide”
•    “If I’m thinking about posting a link, and It’s not really timely, I wait a couple of days.”

Cool terms:

•    Being observable human online - Lisa Williams

•    Radical Transparency - Wired Mag

Period’s for Good

21 01 2008

tampax.png

Tampax’s new campaign combines social responsibility with personality responsibility encouraging its customers to “use your periods for good.” They’re promoting the campaign with television, search marketing and a microsite–protecting futures.

Check out the soft cheese blog for more commentary.

  • Debbie discussed MIT’s Future of Entertainment Conference.
  • Brett shared plans for Pecha-Kucha Boston, which I am excited to attend.
  • We discussed the Social Graph, and this article was mentioned as the a useful source.

it’s free and it works

20 01 2008

Free Conference Call (dot) com rocks my world. Why? It’s free. It works. It also lets me record my calls for free. I can download my recorded calls as an MP3.

And when I had trouble using their service, I called their 1-800 number. A real person answered. He even dialed into the conference call with me and waited until the problem was solved.

I could not believe that I actually received excellent customer service from a “random” web site.  Anyway, this is a completely unsolicited way to say thank you.

Word Noose

20 01 2008

parks_hughes.jpg

A line that Langston Hughes wrote hit me hard today. “Hang yourself, poet, in your own words. Otherwise, you are dead.”

I understood this to mean that you are deeply connected to the world about which you are writing. And by acknowledging the ways in which you are flawed you are freeing yourself as well.

It made me think of bloggers who criticize traditional media and sometimes by accepting advertising begin to behave like the establishments they criticize.

Or political systems.

Or small businesses that grow large and behave badly.

Yelp! it’s a Zync.

20 01 2008

After reading Dean Whitney’s review of Zync, I decided to check it out. I joined. It’s awesome. The site goes into more depth than any other site I’ve been on in Boston for local events. If you sneeze on South Street you’re likely to find it as an event on Zync. It looks pretty, too.

I have a wish and a concern however. My wish is that I can easily bookmark the events I wish to attend with having to dig deep into the details of the event. My concern is as soon as local promoters discover this site the quality of the events will decrease.

Through Zync I found out that John Irving is speaking this Tuesday.  See Yelp for a more robust description.

Blog changes

20 01 2008

I’ve decided to make some changes to my blog. In the past it’s felt like I’m writing to this nameless, faceless community of readers who may or may not like what I have to say. I’ve often used a professional tone, and I write about things that are related to my interests and my career—they are often similar.

I’m about to take this blog in a more personal direction and to write for the few friends whose opinion I respect and with whom I hope to publically debate and to explore the common issues about which we’re both passionate.

If you want my business thoughts, I’ll encourage you to check out my company’s blog at www.refineandfocus.wordpress.com. The content is aimed at marketing professionals with a focus on the media industry.

Let the fun begin…
