Tom’s Style

24 01 2007

Tom, Myspace’s co-founder and icon, writes posts to 100,000,000 million people with the most laid back, friendly style. I think that’s one of the reasons why Myspace has retained its culture.

Project Playlist

23 01 2007

Project Playlist is the newest in Myspace Widgets. It enables Myspace users to publish their playlists to their Myspace page, blog, etc. The revenue model is two fold: a rev. share on music purchases and an ad supported web site. There’s a social component on their web site. If you’re exceptionally bored, you can browse other people’s music or even make new friends. It’s a cool idea. Let’s see if it sticks, or if Myspace offers the same feature with the music on their site.

Robinhood fund

22 01 2007

The Robinhood Fund is a pretty good idea. It’s an online community for people who have wishes. Each month the Robinhood fund grants two wishes by giving away $20,000 to fulfill them. It reminds me of 43things, yet lacks the breadth and diversity of content. I love the concept though, and it’s worth keeping an eye on:

Here are some wishes Robinhood has granted:

  • Money for my emergency room bill
  • Money to start my own little home food business
  • A christmas for my 2 year old
  • A nintendo wii
  • Or a boob job:

I love video jug

19 01 2007

I love Video Jug. It’s a video web site with a robust how-to section and a library of historical content. The content is generally good quality, and it’s the type of web site in which you can get lost for hours. Here are three videos I like:

how to pull of the Michael Jackson side slide

VideoJug: How to pull off the Michael Jackson side slide

Kennedy Sworn In

VideoJug: Inauguration - Kennedy Sworn In, 1961

how to give a great handshake

Snapvine is cool

19 01 2007

Check out Snapvine (www.snapvine.com). It’s pretty cool. Basically, it’s a widget–as you see below–that allows people to leave you voicemail on your blog or myspace page. Here’s the twist, your voicemails are public, just like blog comments. This is really pushing the line between public and private space. Additionally, snapvine is creating a social network from voicemail boxes, as well as providing widgets to Myspace.

Question: What happens to the content of a private message when it becomes public? It is more performative…If this interests you, leave me a message below…go ahead, try!

branding

17 01 2007

“What”s a brand? A singular idea or concept that you own inside the mind of the prospect.” - Al Ries

I was driving on the highway a few days ago when I passed by a stranded motorist. He was waiting by his car. In his left hand, he held an empty red gas container. He pointed to his car with the other hand. On his face, he gave this perfectly delivered look: a mixture of pleading and friendliness.

Even though I past him at 70 miles an hour, seeing him for mere seconds, the image stuck in my mind. I immediately recognized the situation and made a decision as to whether or not I wished to be involved.

This made me realize how effective branding can be: When you create an image people can relate to and immediately identify with, they don’t need to be convinced or persuaded about an idea, product or service. They know.
